Dear Mr. Schulman
I recently learned in media reports that Verizon is providing communication products and services supporting the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). As a Verizon customer and shareholder I am writing to express my objection to Verizon selling goods and services that support the illegal activities of the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant efforts.
Pursuant to the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant activities in towns and cities across the country, poorly trained, masked, militaristic immigration officers brandishing automatic weapons and other tools of combat, have been arresting residents without probable cause, based solely on their accent or the color of their skin. In my own town we have watched as friends and neighbors who have been contributing members to our community for many years, have been pulled from vehicles, arrested in their homes, and torn from their families. We all witnessed the sickening scene in Minneapolis when two Americans were murdered by ICE for committing the “crime” of expressing rights guaranteed under the First Amendment. History will not look favorably on these attacks on our democracy or on the many corporations and business leaders who enabled and facilitated these lawless actions.
It is the duty of every American, and every American corporation, to defend liberty and resist attacks on the rights and protections guaranteed by our Constitution. By permitting your products and services to be used by ICE you are enabling a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism. You may feel a business justification for providing support to ICE’s efforts, but I would like you to know that I will choose to discontinue any business relationship I have with Verizon and will encourage everyone I know to do the same.
Please do the right thing. Sever your business ties with the unlawful and racist tactics of ICE and get on the right side of history.
